Assignment: Make a 30-second motion graphics opening for our How to video for Motion Graphics class at NEIT.

Designing the Opening

In my Digital Media production class, I had picked out the topic to do How to Draw with Washi Tape. So I had to design an opening for that. As usual, I first created my storyboard.

Improved Storyboard

My storyboards went through two renditions. The first one was the main idea of how I was going to move the Washi Tape roll through space and the other was adding onto it to fit the 30-second requirement.

 Assets

Using several 3D models and swatches from my washi tape I was able to create the assets.

Animating

The animation was done in After Effects using the models and 2D assets in multiple shots to string together. To get effects like a tape being rolled on the page and text being written I used masks that hid and then revealed the object at the time the 3D model interacted with the page.

In the first attempt which there was too much negative space. More edits and closer shots and fixing the hierarchy of the text and adding more elements to fill out the screen.
