Assignment: Make a 15-second animation utilizing 3D space to give the illusion of the appearance of a Diorama box. Animation also had to have an introduction/ending ‘curtain’. Assignment for Motion Graphics at NEIT.

Designing the Diorama

The first step to coming up with what I was going to animate was picking my style for the animation and storyboard it out.

Moodboard

Storyboard

I decided I was going to use washi tape and other traditional elements to tell the story of two little blob sisters sharing the same room.

Assets

I then got to make all the assets to be used in the motion graphic.

Everything was created by hand using washi tape and Copic markers.

Animating

All of the assets I made were then brought into Adobe After Effects.

I then followed by animation storyboard and proceeded to animate using keyframes to move the objects through the 3D space.

The first time animating it, the shot was too wide and the boombox was the only object that was getting the viewers attention. To get the final animation as seen above I then had to move everything in the space as well as on the keyframes so everything matched up to their new positions. By sticking to my storyboard plan and using simple shapes I was able to create a successful and stylish diorama motion graphic.
